A small Hyderabad startup just reached orbit with a four-stage vehicle, proving private Indian rockets can deliver payloads and reshape the local launch market.

As reported by Space.com, the Indian private company Skyroot Aerospace has successfully carried out an orbital launch of the Vikram-1 launch vehicle.

The Indian private company Skyroot Aerospace has, for the first time, put a launch vehicle into orbit, establishing a historic precedent for India’s private space sector.

India’s First Private Orbital Launch

According to Skyroot Aerospace, their four-stage launch vehicle Vikram-1 successfully reached low Earth orbit, demonstrating the capabilities of a private space venture. Vikram-1 is designed to deploy various types of satellites into orbit and has the potential to deliver up to 350 kilograms of payload.

This is the dawn of a new space era.

The Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace was founded in 2018.

Mission characteristics and objectives

The four-stage launch vehicle Vikram-1 stands about as tall as a seven-story building and is designed to deploy various types of satellites into orbit.

According to the manufacturer, Vikram-1 can deliver up to 350 kilograms of payload to low Earth orbit. The primary objective of the test launch was to verify the rocket and its systems under real flight conditions.

Other space contexts

As part of ISRO’s first space mission of the year, the agency launched the navigation satellite NVS-02 into a geostationary transfer orbit.

This step underscores the growth of India’s private space sector and the potential for new commercial and scientific missions.
