India

India names Modi party colleague envoy to Bangladesh as ties thaw

NEW DELHI, 27 aprile (Reuters) – Lunedì l’India ha nominato il politico veterano Dinesh Trivedi come suo prossimo Alto Commissario in Bangladesh, in una rara nomina di un funzionario non appartenente al servizio estero, mentre New Delhi cerca di ripristinare i legami con il suo vicino orientale.

I legami tra i Paesi si sono inaspriti dopo che una rivolta popolare ha costretto il primo ministro del Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina a fuggire a New Delhi nel 2024, dove rimane. La nomina di Trivedi evidenzia la spinta dell’India a ricostruire la fiducia con il Bangladesh, che deve affrontare la forte concorrenza della Cina per l’influenza e gli affari.

Trivedi, 75 anni, ex ministro delle ferrovie e della sanità, è entrato a far parte del Bharatiya Janata Party del primo ministro Narendra Modi nel 2021, proveniente da un partito regionale del Bengala Occidentale, uno Stato di confine che svolge un ruolo chiave nei legami dell’India con il Bangladesh e dove Modi ha cercato di espandere l’influenza del suo partito nelle elezioni locali in corso.

“Ci si aspetta che assuma l’incarico a breve”, ha dichiarato il Ministero degli Affari Esteri indiano in un comunicato su Trivedi.

Le relazioni tra i due Paesi hanno iniziato a migliorare solo dopo che, a febbraio, le elezioni hanno portato al potere Tarique Rahman del Partito Nazionalista del Bangladesh, sostituendo un governo ad interim che aveva virato fortemente verso la Cina.

Il Bangladesh faceva parte dell’India nell’era coloniale ed è diventato Pakistan orientale alla fine del dominio britannico nel 1947. New Delhi ha aiutato il Bangladesh a ottenere l’indipendenza dal Pakistan nel 1971.

Il ministro degli esteri del Bangladesh si è recato a Delhi questo mese per ottenere un aumento delle forniture di carburante e fertilizzanti, una più stretta cooperazione in materia di energia e un alleggerimento delle restrizioni di viaggio, ma uno dei maggiori punti critici rimane il rifiuto dell’India di estradare Hasina.
