Yuan Financing in Hong Kong Rises as Global Firms Tap Offshore Market – News and Statistics

A report from Standard Chartered indicates a growing number of companies are utilizing Hong Kong to access yuan funds for operational financing. This trend is attributed to the city’s capital market and a specific liquidity facility.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority operates a yuan facility that provides funding to lenders. This facility initially offered a set quota to a group of banks for arranging client loans. Due to high demand, the facility’s total available amount was increased earlier this year.

Survey data cited in the report shows that among firms with existing yuan exposure, nearly a quarter intend to raise their yuan financing in the coming three years. The survey covered hundreds of global companies across numerous sectors.

Hong Kong maintains substantial yuan bank deposits. Financial institutions there can also access yuan funds through the monetary authority’s facility, which offers an interest rate aligned with a mainland Chinese benchmark.

According to a Standard Chartered executive, international companies are increasingly employing the yuan in various business activities including cross-border trade. Hong Kong has implemented measures to support offshore yuan liquidity and trade financing.
