Benvenuto Cellini gave Aidan O’Brien another Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby victory at the Curragh on Sunday, landing the feature race of one of the biggest weekends in the Irish racing and social calendar.
Ridden by Ryan Moore, the three-year-old justified favouritism in the Group 1 Classic, coming from mid-division to challenge travelling strongly two furlongs from home before taking up the lead inside the final furlong and staying on powerfully to win.
It was a dominant result for Ballydoyle, with Christmas Day finishing second under Ronan Whelan and Pierre Bonnard completing an Aidan O’Brien-trained one-two-three. Raaheeb, trained in Britain by Owen Burrows, was fourth, with Shaihaan, James J Braddock, Action and Bunyola Bay completing the field.
The victory continued O’Brien’s extraordinary association with the race and again underlined the Curragh’s place at the centre of the European Flat racing summer. For Moore, it was another major Classic success in the colours of the powerful Coolmore partnership, with Benvenuto Cellini adding his name to the long roll of honour attached to Ireland’s premier Flat race.
Sunday’s Derby was the centrepiece of a three-day Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Festival that combined elite racing, fashion, music and hospitality across the weekend. The festival opened on Friday evening, continued with Group 1 action in Saturday’s Pretty Polly Stakes, and reached its peak with a nine-race card on Sunday.
Dubai Duty Free’s role as title sponsor once again extended beyond the feature race, with the brand backing six of the nine races on Derby Day. Since coming on board in 2008, the partnership has helped to position the Irish Derby as a wider festival occasion, blending world-class sport with style, entertainment and international profile.
The commercial importance of the weekend was evident across the programme. Sunday combined the Derby itself with the Dubai Duty Free Rockingham Premier Handicap, the Dubai Duty Free Derby Festival Premier Handicap, the Dubai Duty Free International Stakes, the Dubai Duty Free Celebration Stakes and the Dubai Duty Free Ragusa Handicap.
Off the track, Vogue Williams brought additional profile to Derby Sunday as lead judge for the Dubai Duty Free Best Dressed competition, while The Tumbling Paddies provided live entertainment after racing in Champions Hall. Saturday’s style element was led by Una Healy and The K Club’s Most Stylish Racegoer competition, while Friday night featured The Whistlin’ Donkeys.
For the Curragh, the weekend again demonstrated the value of building major race days into broader destination events. The Irish Derby remains the sporting anchor, but the wider mix of premium hospitality, fashion, music and sponsor activation has become central to the event’s appeal for racing fans, families, corporate guests and international visitors.
