The 2026 World Darts Championship will come complete with a bumper £5million prize pot, but Gerwyn Price wants more. That’s after the Welsh whiz took to social media and campaigned for this year’s finalists to receive jewel-encrusted rings to commemorate the occasion.
The PDC has doubled this year’s prize purse compared to last year’s competition. That means players will share a £5m purse, with £1m of that going to the champion and £400,000 to the runner-up. Even bagging a place in the tournament is worth £15,000 alone, while quarter-finalists will receive at least £100,000, double the amount on offer last year. But Price has put in his request for finalists to also receive Super Bowl-inspired rings for making it to the deciding round.
“Golden darts for a 9 darter in the Premier League,” he wrote on Instagram, alongside a picture of a bejewelled Super Bowl ring with a crudely edited PDC symbol in the centre. “How about a World Championship winner Ring?
“Gold/diamond for the winner and Silver/diamond for runner up. Thoughts?”
It was announced earlier this year that that any players who hit a nine-darter in the 2025 Premier League would walk home with a set of 18-karat gold darts worth £30,000. Price, 40, earned himself two of the five sets awarded by sponsors BetMGM this year, with Luke Littler, Luke Humphries and Rob Cross also collecting one set apiece.
To ensure his point got across, Price also tagged the PDC and tournament sponsors Paddy Power in his post. And his followers were largely in support of the innovation.
“Think this would be pretty amazing tbf,” wrote one fan in approval. A second added: “Makes a lot of sense considering you have to give the trophy back.”
Several darts devotees referenced icon Bobby George’s penchant for flash jewellery and said he would “love the idea.” And another suggested 14-time world champion Phil Taylor would “look like Bobby George” given his former dominance in the competition.
However, not everyone saw the sense as one critic questioned: “Is the million quid not enough?” And several others suggested Price, who has raised qualms with the World Championship prize money structure, could get one custom-made himself with the prize money if he went all the way.
‘The Iceman’ would give his nickname an entirely new meaning if he were to get his wish with an ornate World Championship ring. He’s been knocked out at the quarter-final stage in three of the past four tournaments but is carrying some good form into this year’s event.
it may be a little late for darts to get the Super Bowl treatment in time for this year’s tournament, which gets underway in a little more than a fortnight on Dec. 11. However, there’s no problem in planting the seed as PDC decision-makers continue to beef up the rewards on offer at the biggest event of the darts calendar.
