Giant water lily pads open for visitors at South China National Botanical Garden

The South China National Botanical Garden in Guangzhou has launched a seasonal attraction allowing visitors to sit on the enormous leaves of the giant water lily, a summer fixture at the garden.

The experience runs every Saturday and Sunday from now until September 30. No advance booking is required; tickets can be purchased on site.

The garden’s giant water lilies, known for their thick, buoyant structure, can support the weight of an adult. Staff are present throughout to assist participants onto the leaves and manage safety. Visitors sit briefly on the pads over shallow water and have their photos taken against the backdrop of the lily pond.

Giant water lilies, native to South America, grow circular pads that can reach over two meters in diameter. The upturned rims and network of ribs underneath give them the strength to bear weight. The species has been cultivated at the botanical garden for years and typically reaches peak leaf size in late summer.
