A small tourist plane crashed on Saturday as it flew over the Nazca Lines archaeological site in southern Peru leaving 13 dead, Peruvian state news channel TVPeru said.

The channel said the aircraft was carrying 11 passengers and two pilots on a sightseeing flight over the UNESCO World Heritage Site in southern Peru.

The Nazca Lines are a series of enormous ancient geoglyphs etched into the desert more than 2,000 years ago, depicting animals, plants and geometric shapes that are best viewed from the air.

Authorities have not yet said what caused the crash.
