Malaysian PM says Myanmar agrees to take 5,000 Rohingya refugees from Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, 30 luglio (Reuters) – Il primo ministro malese Anwar Ibrahim ha dichiarato che la Birmania ha accettato di accogliere 5.000 richiedenti asilo rohingya attualmente presenti in Malesia, dove recentemente si sono verificate tensioni tra i rifugiati e le comunità locali.

Intervenendo mercoledì a un comizio elettorale in vista delle elezioni regionali nello Stato di Negeri Sembilan previste per questo fine settimana, Anwar ha affermato che le buone relazioni con la Birmania hanno permesso ai due paesi di negoziare sulla questione.

«Abbiamo buoni rapporti con la Birmania. Ora hanno accettato di accogliere 5.000 Rohingya dalla Malesia», ha detto Anwar, senza fornire ulteriori dettagli. 

La Malesia, a maggioranza musulmana, è da tempo considerata un rifugio sicuro per i Rohingya in fuga dalle persecuzioni nella Birmania, paese a maggioranza buddista; alla fine di febbraio, circa 126.000 Rohingya erano registrati presso l’UNHCR in Malesia.

Da decenni ai Rohingya viene negata la cittadinanza in Birmania, il che li ha resi, secondo l’ONU, la più grande popolazione apolide al mondo.

Giovedì l’ufficio presidenziale della Birmania non ha risposto immediatamente a una richiesta di commento sulla dichiarazione di Anwar.

Giovedì l’ufficio dell’UNHCR a Kuala Lumpur non ha risposto a una richiesta di commento.

Mercoledì, l’agenzia delle Nazioni Unite per i rifugiati aveva rilasciato una dichiarazione in cui affermava il proprio pieno impegno a collaborare con la Malesia, dopo che il ministro degli esteri aveva chiesto una revisione delle sue operazioni a meno che non avesse imposto controlli più severi sul rilascio dei documenti per i rifugiati.

TENSIONI TRA I RIFUGIATI

Questa settimana le autorità malesi hanno fermato più di 100 rifugiati musulmani Rohingya che si erano radunati davanti all’ufficio dell’UNHCR a Kuala Lumpur, rilasciandoli alcuni giorni dopo in seguito a una verifica dei loro documenti.

I rifugiati, che secondo la polizia erano tutti in possesso di documenti validi dell’UNHCR, avevano chiesto assistenza all’agenzia delle Nazioni Unite dopo aver affermato di essere stati sfrattati dalle loro case dai residenti nello stato settentrionale di Penang.

Negli ultimi mesi i rifugiati rohingya in Malesia sono stati oggetto di crescenti vessazioni e controlli, compresa la chiusura delle scuole comunitarie, dopo essere stati bersaglio di incitamento all’odio e disinformazione online.

La Malesia, che non è firmataria della Convenzione delle Nazioni Unite sui rifugiati e considera i richiedenti asilo come migranti illegali, all’inizio di questo mese ha chiesto all’UNHCR di sospendere temporaneamente la registrazione di nuovi rifugiati nel paese, mentre sta mettendo a punto un sistema nazionale per la gestione dei richiedenti asilo.   

Nel 2021, la Malesia ha espulso via mare oltre 1.000 cittadini della Birmania, nonostante un’ordinanza del tribunale che ne vietava l’espulsione e le denunce delle organizzazioni per i diritti umani secondo cui l’operazione di rimpatrio aveva coinvolto richiedenti asilo e rifugiati registrati presso l’UNHCR.
