Thermal coal futures were trading near $131 per tonne in late July, according to Trading Economics. This level was close to the highest point seen in a month, following a four-month low recorded in late June. Supply concerns originating from Indonesia were cited as a supporting factor for prices.

Dry weather conditions disrupted coal barging operations along the Barito River in Kalimantan, a key transport route for the country’s coal exports. Some miners reportedly declared force majeure on affected volumes. These disruptions raised concerns about potential shipment delays from Indonesia, the world’s largest thermal coal exporter, reinforcing expectations of tighter near-term availability.

Simultaneously, rising oil prices amid escalating Middle East tensions lifted broader energy markets. Concerns over possible supply disruptions added to the upward pressure on fuel costs. However, gains remained limited by subdued demand in China, where high inventories and cautious utility buying continued to weigh on import demand.

This report provides a comprehensive view of the coal other than lignite industry in Indonesia, tracking demand, supply, and trade flows across the national value chain. It explains how demand across key channels and end-use segments shapes consumption patterns, while also mapping the role of input availability, production efficiency, and regulatory standards on supply.

Beyond headline metrics, the study benchmarks prices, margins, and trade routes so you can see where value is created and how it moves between domestic suppliers and international partners. The analysis is designed to support strategic planning, market entry, portfolio prioritization, and risk management in the coal other than lignite landscape in Indonesia.
