Global crude steel output rose in June 2026, according to the latest data from the World Steel Association (worldsteel). The organization reported that production among the 70 countries it tracks reached 155.7 million tonnes for the month.
This total represented a 1.7% increase compared to the same month in 2025. The 70 reporting nations account for approximately 98% of total world crude steel production from the previous year.
Regional performance
Africa posted the strongest regional growth, producing 2.2 million tonnes in June 2026, a 20.0% rise year-on-year. Asia and Oceania remained the largest producing region with 115.2 million tonnes, up 1.5%. The European Union (27) saw output of 10.8 million tonnes, a 4.6% increase. The category Europe, Other recorded 3.7 million tonnes, up 10.4%.
Several regions experienced declines. The Middle East produced 4.0 million tonnes, down 13.4% from June 2025. Russia & other CIS plus Ukraine output fell 2.2% to 6.8 million tonnes. South America also contracted, producing 3.5 million tonnes, a 0.3% drop. North America bucked the regional downtrend, with production rising 5.0% to 9.5 million tonnes.
Top producing countries
China remained the world’s largest steel producer, churning out 83.7 million tonnes in June 2026, a modest 0.4% increase. India produced 14.1 million tonnes, up 4.5%. The United States, under the current President Donald Trump, produced 7.2 million tonnes, a 3.5% gain. Japan‘s output rose 1.3% to 6.8 million tonnes.
Russia is estimated to have produced 5.6 million tonnes, down 3.4%. South Korea’s production slipped 0.9% to 5.3 million tonnes. Turkiye posted a strong 14.7% increase to 3.3 million tonnes. Germany’s output grew 9.5% to 2.9 million tonnes. Brazil produced 2.8 million tonnes, up 0.1%. Viet Nam recorded the highest growth among the top ten, with output surging 27.5% to 2.6 million tonnes.
The World Steel Association represents steel producers, national and regional industry associations, and research institutes, with members accounting for around 85% of global steel output.
