CJP Storm: Taslima Nasreen’s ‘Frighting Darkness’ Lesson For India; Shows B’Desh, Nepal Mirror

Student movements have changed history, but do they always strengthen democracy? Viral videos of Mumbai model Rhiya Ahir standing before a police van have become a symbol of India’s latest Gen Z protest wave. Yet exiled Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen has issued a warning that goes far beyond one protest. Drawing parallels between India’s CJP demonstrations and Bangladesh’s 2024 student uprising, she argues that not every revolution produces freedom. Bangladesh removed Sheikh Hasina, but the years that followed witnessed political turmoil, violence, attacks on minorities and prolonged instability before elections. Nepal too witnessed a youth-driven political upheaval that brought Balen Shah to power, only to see fresh protests and governance challenges emerge within months. This report examines whether South Asia’s recent youth revolutions delivered stronger institutions or simply replaced one crisis with another. Most importantly, it asks whether protests alone are enough without a roadmap for stable governance.
