India is set to deploy its first utility-scale vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) energy storage system, marking a major milestone in the country’s push to expand long-duration energy storage alongside its rapidly growing renewable energy sector.
Delectrik Systems announced it has been selected, alongside infrastructure firm Bondada Engineering, to develop a 100 MWh vanadium flow battery project for NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd (NTPC REL), a subsidiary of India’s largest power producer, NTPC. The project will be installed at Gujarat’s Khavda Solar Park in 2027, which is expected to become the world’s largest renewable energy park with 30 GW of generation capacity by 2029.
Unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries, vanadium redox flow batteries store energy in liquid electrolytes, allowing them to operate for longer durations with minimal degradation and a lower fire risk. The technology is increasingly viewed as well suited for balancing intermittent solar and wind generation on electricity grids.
The project follows Delectrik’s successful deployment of a smaller 3 MWh flow battery demonstration system for NTPC in Greater Noida in 2025 and represents the first utility-scale, non-lithium battery energy storage project designed, engineered, and manufactured entirely in India.
NTPC, which has more than 90 GW of installed generation capacity, aims to expand its renewable energy portfolio to 60 GW by 2032 as India accelerates its clean energy transition. The state-owned utility has increasingly turned to battery storage to improve grid reliability and support round-the-clock renewable electricity.
Delectrik said it is targeting at least 1 GWh of flow battery orders over the next 12 months across India, Australia, Southeast Asia and Africa. The company has also established subsidiaries focused on vanadium oxide production and energy-storage-as-a-service offerings, including for data centers.
As India rapidly expands renewable energy capacity, long-duration storage technologies such as flow batteries are expected to play an increasingly important role in stabilizing the grid and reducing dependence on lithium-ion systems for large-scale applications.
