Questions remain as to how Maghull man, 25, died in Bangkok

Liam White was found in a hostel in the Thai capital city

Questions remain over the sudden death of a Merseyside man in Thailand following an inquest into his death earlier this week. Liam White, from Maghull, had been in the Asian country and staying at a hostel in Bangkok at the time of his death.

A record of inquest published following a hearing at Bootle Town Hall on Wednesday, July 8, noted how Mr White had been out the night before he was found dead in Hostel 24 Backpackers 50 in Bang Chak, Bangkok, on January 13 this year. The document stated he had booked the hostel three days earlier and had been staying in a dorm with multiple people.

Since his death, there have been two post mortems, each with conflicting view on the cause of death for the 25-year-old joiner.

The document, written by assistant coroner Elizabeth Wheeler explained how the Thai post mortem said he died from natural causes – cardiac failure in association with infective pneumonia.

However, the UK post mortem proposed his cause of death was unascertained.

Ms Wheeler wrote: “The Thai post mortem records the presence of cerebral oedema and brain haemorrhage, but does not outline why these were not part of the cause of death.

“It records the heart as ‘enlarged’ but the UK pathologist scale records the heart within normal limits.

“The UK post mortem did not find the evidence of infection in the lungs which was recorded by the Thai post mortem.

“The Thai post mortem notes that morphine and codeine were detected in the blood- but the concentrations were not recorded.

“These drugs can be additive and cause respiratory depression – especially if there was a chest infection.

“Given the uncertainties and contradictions in the medical evidence, it is therefore not possible to say on the balance of probabilities what the medical cause of death is. It is therefore not possible to say how Mr White probably came by his death.”

Ms Wheeler recorded an open conclusion.

Mr White’s funeral is believed to have taken place at West Lancashire Crematorium in Burscough on January 31 following his repatriation.

A GoFundMe was set up following his death, with £5,000 being raised to help his family with costs of repatriation.
