Why University of Indonesia Distances Itself from Students’ LGBT Review

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – University of Indonesia (UI) said the study results posted by the Student Executive Board (BEM) of the Psychology Faculty on homosexuality “does not reflect” the university’s stance.

“We emphasize that the student organization’s study material does not reflect the official stance of Universitas Indonesia,” said UI’s Director of Public, Media, Government, and International Relations, Erwin Agustian Panigoro, as quoted on Sunday, July 5, 2026.

The statement was made after the student board’s publication citing the study results of the 2008 American Psychological Association (APA) circulated widely on social media. The student board’s post mentioned that there was no research supporting the inherent association between homosexuality and mental disorder.

While the post has since been deleted from Instagram, screenshots have been widely spread and sparked debates across various social media platforms.

According to Erwin, the University of Indonesia is committed to Pancasila as the nation’s value and all applicable regulations.

Erwin also denied that the student board’s published review promoted “a certain lifestyle” and instead used academic references from psychological literature.

“Academic references from scientific literature are fundamentally different from campaigning or disseminating a lifestyle. The University of Indonesia does not conduct, facilitate, or support the spread of any lifestyle,” said Erwin, referring to the LGBTQ+ minority group.

The university also emphasized that the core of the study compiled by the student board is to reject violence and persecution against fellow faculty members.

Despite this, UI reaffirmed that all members of the faculty are entitled to protection from various forms of violence and intimidation, threats of persecution, and doxxing, regardless of personal background.

Additionally, the university said it will strengthen the mechanism for disseminating study materials on behalf of the UI institution to avoid public misunderstandings. UI also urges the public to approach information in a comprehensive, proportional, and fact-based manner to maintain a safe academic environment.
