University of Indonesia Blocks Republic Conference, Event Moves Online

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The General Secretary of the Republican Conference Committee, Yanuar Nugroho, stated that the conference titled ‘Konferensi Republik: Jalan Menata Kembali Republik‘ (Republic Conference: The Road to Rebuilding the Republic) will continue via zoom at 1:00 PM WIB (Western Indonesian Time) on Sunday, June 28, 2026.

“We will immediately hold a work meeting for consolidation,” he said in a Press Conference at the UI Campus, Salemba, Central Jakarta, on Sunday, June 28, 2026.

Originally, the Republic Conference was supposed to be held at the UI (University of Indonesia) Campus in Salemba, Central Jakarta, on Sunday, June 28, 2026. However, UI suddenly banned the event, stating that it did not meet the administrative procedures.

The committee had previously scheduled the morning session for discussions. However, the ban by UI led the agenda directly to the preparation of views during the work meeting session.

There are three issues discussed in the work meeting. Firstly, regarding the direction, purpose, and values of the Republic Conference movement. He recalled the history of the youth movement and intellectuals who established the Indonesian Association in 1928.

The second issue concerns the future organizational arrangements, including plans to visit regions with the aim of spreading ideas. “How we network. We discussed this in the second topic,” he said.

The third issue addresses the leadership structure and division of roles. The committee will discuss the distribution of roles in the movement. “But this is not leadership like committees that later become commissioners of state-owned enterprises, that’s irrelevant,” he said.

The Republic Conference Committee’s Jaleswari Pramodhawardani stated that UI claimed the event did not meet the administrative procedures. “Yet, we have followed the procedures,” she said when met at the UI Campus in Salemba, Central Jakarta, on Sunday, June 28, 2026.

She explained that the committee had submitted the event permit letter well in advance. On Wednesday, June 24, 2026, UI issued a campus facility usage permit in the form of a task letter. “We took the letter as acceptance,” she said.

The committee had also prepared various necessities a day before the event. Until Saturday, June 27, there had been no change in the campus’s stance. The room had been set up with the Republican Conference backdrop and some equipment had been arranged.

However, at 9:00 PM WIB, the security officers halted the ongoing loading process. At midnight, the committee received a notice of the event permit rejection from UI. Jaleswari suspected there were external parties pressuring UI, asking for the event to be canceled.

The Director of Public Relations, Media, Government, and International Relations at UI Erwin Agustian Panigoro stated that UI is preparing a response.

This consolidation of the Republic Conference is a follow-up to the first Republic Conference held in Yogyakarta on May 30, 2026. The consolidation in Yogyakarta was attended by hundreds of civil society organizations, activists, and academics.

The conference at Universitas Gadjah Mada resulted in several key findings. One of them is attention to the simultaneous difficulties occurring in various aspects of the republic’s life.

Civil society also raised concerns about democratic institutions that are far from representing and overseeing functions, despite their formal existence. According to the Republic Conference, a crisis has occurred that is cross-sectoral and touches the relationship between citizens.
