UK downgrades UAE travel warning as Foreign Office changes advice for Dubai and Abu Dhabi

The UK Foreign Office has lifted its warning against all but essential travel to the UAE, following an easing of regional tensions linked to the conflict in the Middle East.

In an update issued on Thursday 18 June, the UK government’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said it “no longer advises against all but essential travel to the UAE” — a change that’s set to ease concerns over travel to the region for UK travellers. Other governments may quickly follow suit.

The update follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran to bring an end to the conflict that began on Saturday 28 February and caused widespread travel disruption. However, the FCDO said travellers should continue to monitor developments closely and remain alert to the possibility of renewed hostilities. “The situation remains unpredictable and attacks could resume at short notice,” the updated advice states.

The FCDO added that if hostilities resume, British nationals should follow the advice of local authorities, monitor local and international media, sign up for FCDO travel alerts and stay away from areas around security or military facilities. Travellers are also being advised to keep departure plans under review and ensure their travel documents are up to date.

The UK update follows a similar move by Australia, which has lowered its travel warning for the UAE, along with Bahrain, Israel, Kuwait and Qatar, from its highest “do not travel” level to “reconsider your need to travel”.

Insurance had become a major concern for travellers before the UK changed its guidance, with some policies at risk of being invalidated for trips to or transits through parts of the Gulf, if taken against government advice.

In response, UAE airlines began introducing additional cover to reassure passengers. Emirates is offering reimbursement for conflict-related medical expenses of up to US$25,000 and a complimentary trip extension of up to 30 days.

Etihad Airways has also introduced cover in partnership with the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, which applies automatically to eligible passengers for up to 15 days, with no application required.
