Electric sports car Denza Z launches with 1,180 kW

According to Chinese media, the Denza Z will launch in China in July, available as a convertible with a retractable soft top and as a roadster with a removable hardtop. The Denza Z seats four and measures 4.78 metres in length, 1.99 metres in height, and 1.35 metres in width, with a wheelbase of 2.78 metres.

At Auto China in Beijing, BYD had already hinted at a power output exceeding 1,000 PS – and this has now been significantly surpassed, even exceeding 1,000 kW. According to the Chinese homologation process, the sports car achieves a peak output of 1,180 kW (1,582 PS). This is delivered by an electric motor on the front axle rated at 500 kW and two electric motors on the rear axle with a combined output of 680 kW, totalling the aforementioned 1,180 kW. This output is considerably higher than that of the new all-electric AMG GT 4-door coupé, which has a peak output of 860 kW.

During its presentation in Beijing, BYD described the Denza Z as a ‘masterpiece’ meticulously designed by a global team led by BYD’s design chief, Wolfgang Egger. “The electrified super sports car represents the fusion of technology and design perfection, characterised by a pure aesthetic built on a world-leading technical architecture,” the company stated.

The carbon-fibre body incorporates BYD’s DiSus-M body control system. The Blade Battery 2.0 is designed to enable longer journeys, while Flash Charging ensures short charging times. “The Z has already tackled test drives and lap record attempts on the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife and will make an appearance at the renowned Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK this summer,” BYD announced.

In addition to the standard variants of the Denza Z, which achieve a top speed of 300 km/h, there is also a version with a sports package that can reach 350 km/h. This increased performance is not achieved through larger motors but primarily by a large rear wing on the tailgate, which provides additional downforce, enabling even higher speeds.

Although the Denza Z will initially only be available in China, it could later be introduced to Germany. This follows the opening of Denza’s first standalone store in Germany by the BYD premium brand in Hamburg in early June. Stores in Cologne and Frankfurt will follow shortly (DE). By the end of the year, around 40 Denza sales outlets and at least 80 service locations are planned across Germany. Initially, the electric Grand Tourer Z9GT and the D9 dm-i van (a plug-in hybrid) will be available in Germany.
