Three-Night, Four-Day Visit to India After Attending NATO

“Progress to Be Made on a Range of Issues with India”

“India Is a Great Ally and Partner”

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited India ahead of next week’s meeting of the Quad, the security forum comprising the United States, Japan, Australia, and India.

On May 23 (local time), Secretary Rubio arrived in Kolkata, West Bengal, in eastern India, for a four-day, three-night visit. As his first engagement, he visited the Mother House, the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity founded by Mother Teresa. Secretary Rubio traveled to India after attending the NATO Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held the previous day in Helsingborg, Sweden.

Sergio Gor, the U.S. Ambassador to India, announced via social media that Secretary Rubio is scheduled to meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi later in the day in New Delhi.

He stated, “Over the next few days, the two countries will discuss and make progress on a range of issues including trade, technology, defense, and the Quad.”

This is Secretary Rubio’s first visit to India and comes at a time when both countries are attempting to restore relations after significant friction during trade negotiations last year. Ahead of his trip, he revealed that the United States is negotiating to increase energy exports to India. He added, “There are many areas for cooperation with India,” emphasizing, “India is a great ally and partner, which makes this visit important.”

On May 24, Secretary Rubio will hold a bilateral meeting with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and on May 26, he will attend the Quad foreign ministers’ meeting. This marks the first Quad foreign ministers’ meeting in 10 months since the July 2025 meeting in Washington, D.C., and the third such meeting under the second Donald Trump administration. The foreign ministers of the four countries are expected to discuss cooperation on critical minerals and other topics, particularly with China in mind.
