Two people killed in a crash that closed a key South Island route for several hours on Friday were reportedly tourists from Hong Kong.

The three-vehicle crash on State Highway 1 just north of New Zealand’s longest road bridge over the Rakaia River was reported to emergency services at 1.12pm on Friday.

Police confirmed ambulance services were called to attend to five people injured in the crash.

“Sadly, despite the efforts of emergency personnel, two people were pronounced deceased at the scene,” a spokesperson said.

“Three others have injuries that range from moderate to critical.”

The South China Morning Post reported those killed were two tourists from Hong Kong.

It reported the Chinese consulate general in Christchurch had “expressed deep sorrow over the deaths” and would provide assistance to the injured and their families.

Traffic was significantly delayed during the closure, with the detour route involving an extra 100km of travel between Rakaia and Christchurch.

The highway reopened just before 7pm on Friday.
