Almost a year after the launch of the silver Nikon Zf, Nikon is following it up with a matching Silver Zf-GR1 extension grip. The accessory is designed specifically for the Zf Silver Edition, although it will only be officially available in Japan.

The Silver Zf-GR1 features silver accents that complement the camera body, including a matching silver base plate that helps create a seamless appearance when attached. In addition to the extended front grip, it also includes a small rear thumb rest to improve overall handling.

“While maintaining the Zf’s design aesthetic, this grip improves handling performance. The grip surface uses the same artificial leather as the camera body for a unified look when attached,” Nikon Japan says.

Improved Handling for the Nikon Zf

The extension grip is constructed from lightweight aluminum and uses an artificial leather finish that matches the camera body. It measures 147.3 x 55.9 x 71.1mm and weighs 121.9g.

Despite its lightweight design, the grip includes a standard 1/4″-20 tripod socket and an Arca-Swiss compatible base plate. Nikon also designed it so users can still access the battery and memory card compartment without removing the grip.

Japan Exclusive Accessory

The Zf-GR1 remains a Japan domestic market product and is not officially sold in many international markets, including the United States. Nikon USA currently lists the accessory as archived, making it unavailable through official channels.

As a result, photographers outside Japan often have to rely on grey-market imports. Listings occasionally appear on eBay and Amazon, although prices are usually well above Nikon’s suggested retail price.

A Nikon Zf Owner’s Perspective

As a Nikon Zf owner, I can personally say that an extension grip is one of the most important accessories for the camera. While the retro-inspired design is one of the Zf’s biggest strengths, the small grip can make the camera feel slippery, especially when paired with larger lenses.

Unlike the lightweight film cameras that inspired its design, the Zf weighs around 710g with battery installed. Adding a lens, the overall weight is usually above 1 kg. During longer shooting sessions, the additional grip makes a noticeable difference in comfort and handling.

I’ve used several grips and cages from both SmallRig and Neewer, and the SmallRig extension grip remains my favorite. It provides a secure hold without significantly increasing the camera’s size and costs around $40, making it a much more affordable option than the grey-market pricing currently attached to the Nikon Zf-GR1.

Pricing and Availability

Nikon Japan will begin accepting pre-orders for the Silver Zf-GR1 on June 10, 2026. The grip is priced at 18,700 yen, or approximately $117 at current exchange rates.

Shipping is expected to begin on June 19, 2026. Given the popularity of the original Zf-GR1 and the limited availability of this silver version, photographers outside Japan may find it difficult to buy one at its official retail price.
