US digital infrastructure platform Equinix, Inc. plans to invest US$ 190 million to build a new data center, KL2, in Cyberjaya, Malaysia, the firm says in a press release yesterday. KL2 plans to be powered by renewable energy from the first day of operations which is aligned with the company’s global goal to achieve 100 per cent renewable energy coverage across its retail IBX footprint by 2030.

Located less than 1 km from its other data center KL1, KL2 will deliver more than 2,200 cabinets when fully built out.

KL2 marks Equinix’s fourth data center in Malaysia, after KL1 and ongoing investments in Johor (JH1 and the upcoming JH2).  KL2 is part of Equinix’s long-term expansion strategy in Malaysia, with future growth potential supported by adjacent land secured for future expansion, reinforcing Kuala Lumpur’s role as a key interconnection hub in ASEAN.

Cheam Tat Inn, Managing Director of Equinix Malaysia, said, “By providing AI-ready infrastructure in Kuala Lumpur and Johor responsibly, we are directly supporting national agendas to advance the country’s AI ambitions. KL2 will not only enable businesses to process data closer to the source and deploy Distributed AI with agility, but it will also drive high-value job creation and build long-term economic resilience for the nation.”

In the Asia-Pacific region, Equinix’s portfolio includes 65 data centers across key cities in Australia, China (with partner), Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore.
