Jakarta. A fire that broke out at the Mediterania Tanjung Duren Apartment in West Jakarta on Thursday caused no fatalities, though several residents suffered breathing difficulties after thick smoke filled parts of the building.
Management of Tower C, the section directly affected by the blaze, confirmed that no deaths had been reported as of Thursday, even as emergency teams continued evacuation and safety checks.
“There are no fatalities. However, due to the heavy smoke, some residents experienced shortness of breath and required treatment,” said Anggi, manager of Tower C.
The fire was first detected by the building’s internal fire protection system, which triggered an early warning and allowed staff to respond quickly to the source of the blaze.

Anggi said the response was further supported by the proximity of fire stations to the apartment complex, enabling rapid deployment of firefighting units. Building management also implemented standard emergency procedures, including initial firefighting efforts before additional crews arrived.
“We immediately followed standard operating procedures. Fortunately, the fire department is located not far from here, so the response was swift. Our main focus right now is evacuating residents,” he said.
As of Thursday, joint teams were still sweeping through floors, particularly in the affected tower, to ensure no residents remained trapped inside.
Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the fire, as efforts remain focused on evacuation and securing the site.
The apartment complex consists of four towers, with only Tower C significantly impacted. The other three towers were not reported to have sustained major damage.
Preliminary estimates suggest around 200 residents were in the affected tower at the time of the incident. Despite initial panic, management said most occupants remained cooperative during evacuation procedures.
“Residents were cooperative and followed instructions, although some were understandably anxious, especially those with family members still inside during the incident,” Anggi said.
Once emergency operations are complete, the management plans to conduct a full evaluation, including identifying the cause of the fire, assessing the effectiveness of safety systems, and implementing measures to prevent similar incidents.
“We will carry out a thorough evaluation once conditions are fully safe, including identifying the exact cause of the fire,” Anggi said.
