Two arrested in entering automobile incidents in Crisp County

CRISP COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) -The Crisp County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) arrested two individuals following an early morning investigation into multiple reports of vehicle break-ins at a residence along US Highway 280 West.

According to CCSO at approximately 7:00 a.m. on Friday, April 24, deputies were dispatched to 2104 US Highway 280 West after receiving reports of individuals entering parked vehicles on the property.

Upon arrival, deputies encountered a suspect, later identified as James Cumbus, who had been observed by a resident looking into vehicles and attempting to flee the scene. He was detained at the location.

During the investigation, several victims reported that items had been stolen from their unlocked vehicles. Deputies were able to recover some of the missing property in the surrounding area.

While continuing their investigation, deputies also made contact with a second individual who initially provided false identifying information. He was later correctly identified as Joseph Smith.

Authorities confirmed that Smith had an outstanding warrant through the Cordele Police Department.

Arrests and Charges

Joseph Smith, 32, of Pitts, GA, was arrested on his outstanding warrant and additionally charged with:

  • 4 counts – Entering Automobile or Other Motor Vehicle with Intent to Commit Theft or Felony
  • Obstructing or Hindering Law Enforcement Officers
  • Giving False Name, Address, or Date of Birth to Law Enforcement Officer

James Cumbus, 39, of Vienna, GA, was arrested and charged with:

  • 4 counts – Party to a Crime

The Crisp County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident. Authorities have not released additional information at this time.
