On July 23, 2021, a massive sculpture at the Liberty Sculpture Park in Yermo, Calif., critical of the Chinese government was reduced to a pile of charred and melted ruins.
The strange, and still not fully explained incident, would help to unravel a wide and sometimes bizarre plot of alleged harassment and intimidation by Chinese state security services against dissidents who have taken refuge in the United States.
