Moldova denounces CIS civil aviation modernization agreement | Ukraine news

A draft resolution due for the 15 April cabinet meeting would formally denounce the 1995 CIS aviation agreement, escalating Moldova’s exit from CIS structures.

Moldova officially denounces the agreement on the modernization of civil aviation between the CIS member states, adopted in Moscow on November 3, 1995.

As part of preparations for the government meeting scheduled for April 15, a draft decree on the denunciation of this agreement has been published.

The draft notes that Moldova’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs will officially notify the CIS Executive Committee of the decision.

Over the past two years Moldova has initiated a review of the relevance and possible application of agreements concluded under the CIS framework. Currently, 283 agreements have been denounced, about 60 are under review.

On April 2, Moldova’s parliament, in a second reading, approved the denunciation of the Agreement on the Establishment of the CIS, as well as the protocol and the organization’s charter, marking the country’s withdrawal from the CIS statutory bodies.

Context of the decision and the government’s position

According to the explanations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the fundamental values and principles of the CIS no longer align with the country’s interests, particularly regarding territorial integrity and inviolability of borders.

The authorities point to Russia’s actions in the region, including the war against Ukraine and the illegal military presence on Moldova’s territory.

In these steps, the financial aspect is also mentioned: Moldova must repay debts amounting to 100 thousand euros.

This development highlights the country’s intention to reassess participation in the CIS and to focus on other formats of cooperation with international partners. Such a move signals a realignment of the foreign policy course and a drive to establish new trajectories of cooperation with international partners.
