As Diwali week lights up the country, traders and investors are wondering whether the stock market is open on Monday, October 20 or not? With multiple holidays lined up, every investor needs to track the trading calendar closely.

Let’s take a look at what is open, what is closed, and when you can trade this festive season.

Diwali Week: What is open, What is shut

This year, the Diwali celebrations bring a mix of market holidays and one very special trading window. The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) will remain open for normal trading on Monday, October 20.

However, both exchanges will remain closed on Tuesday, October 21, for Diwali Lakshmi Puja, and again on Wednesday, October 22, for Balipratipada.

That means investors get only one regular trading day between a weekend break and the festive holiday.

When is the one-hour special Muhurat trading on Diwali

While the markets will be closed for the main part of Diwali day, there is still one highly anticipated event on the calendar – the Muhurat Trading session.

To understand it simply, this symbolic one-hour trading window marks the start of Vikram Samvat 2082, the Hindu New Year. It is seen as an auspicious time to invest, symbolising prosperity and good fortune.

This year, the Muhurat Trading session will take place on Tuesday, October 21, from 1:45 PM to 2:45 PM.

Here’s the schedule to note:

Pre-Open Session: 1:30 PM – 1:45 PM

Main Trading Session: 1:45 PM – 2:45 PM

Modification Time: till 2:55 PM

During this session, trading will be available across equities, F&O, currencies, commodities, and SLB segments.

Check key festivals next week and the dates

The festive season begins early for the market this year, starting with Dhanteras on Saturday, October 18, followed by Sunday, October 1, both non-trading days as the exchanges remain closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

Regular trading will resume on Monday, October 20, before the markets take another pause for the Diwali holidays.

What’s next after Diwali?

After the festive break, the next stock market holidays will be on-

Gurunanak Jayanti – Wednesday, November 5

Christmas – Thursday, December 25
