The team have noticed an increase in local sellers advertising counterfeit items such as football shirts, designer handbags, toys, branded clothing and footwear via online platforms.
The team are currently investigating several local sellers.
Counterfeit goods are often described by sellers as ‘replicas’ and are much cheaper than the genuine article.
They are usually made from poor quality materials, can pose safety risks and undermine legitimate businesses.
Selling fake goods is illegal and can have serious consequences. Accounts linked to illegal sales may also be flagged, suspended or permanently closed.
Gary Webster, Trading Standards Group Leader at Cornwall Council, said: “Counterfeit goods harm our local economy. These illegal sellers undermine local retailers and damage the reputation of trusted brands.
“In the case of electrical items or toys, these items can pose a real danger to consumers.
“Anyone caught selling fake products could face prosecution, hefty fines, and even imprisonment.
“We encourage people to buy from reputable sources and report any suspected counterfeit activity to Trading Standards.”
Selling counterfeit goods online, at markets, or through social media is a criminal offence under the Trade Marks Act 1994.
Under the Proceeds of Crime Act, any money made from selling counterfeit products could be confiscated, meaning offenders risk becoming the subject of a financial investigation and losing the financial gains from their criminal activity.
Trading Standards works closely with police to tackle this issue and protect consumers.
