1 Value Stock with Impressive Fundamentals and 2 We Find Risky

Value investing has created more billionaires than any other strategy, like Warren Buffett, who built his fortune by purchasing wonderful businesses at reasonable prices. But these hidden gems are few and far between – many stocks that appear cheap often stay that way because they face structural issues.

Identifying genuine bargains from value traps is something many investors struggle with, which is why we started StockStory – to help you find the best companies. That said, here is one value stock trading at a big discount to its intrinsic value and two climbing an uphill battle.

Forward P/E Ratio: 11.9x

With humble beginnings as a stereo equipment seller, Best Buy (NYSE:BBY) now sells a broad selection of consumer electronics, appliances, and home office products.

Why Are We Wary of BBY?

  1. Disappointing same-store sales over the past two years show customers aren’t responding well to its product selection and store experience

  2. Gross margin of 22.4% is below its competitors, leaving less money for marketing and promotions

  3. Subpar operating margin of 3.1% constrains its ability to invest in process improvements or effectively respond to new competitive threats

Best Buy’s stock price of $77.68 implies a valuation ratio of 11.9x forward P/E. Read our free research report to see why you should think twice about including BBY in your portfolio, it’s free for active Edge members.

Forward P/E Ratio: 12.8x

Whether it be packaged crackers, broths, or beverages, Treehouse Foods (NYSE:THS) produces a wide range of private-label foods for grocery and food service customers.

Why Do We Pass on THS?

  1. Falling unit sales over the past two years indicate demand is soft and that the company may need to revise its product strategy

  2. Expenses have increased as a percentage of revenue over the last year as its operating margin fell by 6.5 percentage points

  3. Below-average returns on capital indicate management struggled to find compelling investment opportunities, and its shrinking returns suggest its past profit sources are losing steam

TreeHouse Foods is trading at $23.60 per share, or 12.8x forward P/E. Check out our free in-depth research report to learn more about why THS doesn’t pass our bar.

Forward P/B Ratio: 0.9x

Founded in 1959 and serving approximately 677,000 policyholders who rely on its financial protection products, F&G Annuities & Life (NYSE:FG) provides fixed annuities, life insurance, and pension risk transfer solutions to retail and institutional clients.

Why Will FG Outperform?

  1. Market penetration was impressive this cycle as its net premiums earned expanded by 28.6% annually over the last two years

  2. Impressive 37.7% annual book value per share growth over the last two years indicates it’s building equity value this cycle

  3. Projected book value per share growth of 41% for the next 12 months is above its two-year trend, pointing to accelerating profitability

At $33.14 per share, F&G Annuities & Life trades at 0.9x forward P/B. Is now the right time to buy? See for yourself in our comprehensive research report, it’s free for active Edge members.

The market’s up big this year – but there’s a catch. Just 4 stocks account for half the S&P 500’s entire gain. That kind of concentration makes investors nervous, and for good reason. While everyone piles into the same crowded names, smart investors are hunting quality where no one’s looking – and paying a fraction of the price. Check out the high-quality names we’ve flagged in our Top 9 Market-Beating Stocks. This is a curated list of our High Quality stocks that have generated a market-beating return of 244% over the last five years (as of June 30, 2025).

Stocks that made our list in 2020 include now familiar names such as Nvidia (+1,545% between March 2020 and March 2025) as well as under-the-radar businesses like the once-small-cap company Comfort Systems (+782% five-year return).
