The Institution of Engineering and Technology, Ghana (IET-GH), has commended the Management of Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) for its bold initiative to revive the refinery using local engineers and technologists.

The President of IET-GH, Henry Kwadwo Boateng, who made the commendation, lauded TOR’s reliance on local professionals, describing it as a testament to Ghana’s engineering competence.

He said that when he led a delegation to pay a working visit to the refinery to assess progress on rehabilitation works.

He urged IET-GH members engaged in the project to remain dedicated and professional, while encouraging staff to support the management team and view themselves as part of the Reset Agenda rather than resorting to agitation that could hinder progress.

Mr Boateng expressed optimism that TOR’s restart, expected in November, would restore national confidence in Ghanaian engineering excellence and contribute to Ghana’s industrial growth

Welcoming the delegation, Managing Director, Edmond Kombat, expressed appreciation to IET-GH, noting that most of the rehabilitation activities were being executed by local engineers.

He reaffirmed TOR’s commitment to partner IET-GH for professional certification and training as part of the President’s reset agenda, which focuses on economic recovery and job creation.

Mr Kombat further disclosed TOR’s plan to introduce a structured training programme for engineering students from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Energy and Natural Resources, University of Mines and Technology, and other technical universities.

Partnership

The refinery is also pursuing a partnership with Middle Eastern refineries to train about 5,000 Ghanaian engineers next year.

The president-elect of IET-GH, Wonder Davor, commended TOR’s leadership for its strategic foresight, while  Dr Miriam Eduful advised staff to uphold strict safety standards and ensure proper use of protective equipment.

During a facility tour led by Abraham Quayson, the IET-GH team inspected key installations, including the Crude Oil Distillation and Reforming Units.

TOR engineers recently completed complex refractory works previously handled by expatriates, saving the nation’s significant foreign exchange.

Over the years, the IET-GH has witnessed remarkable growth in its membership base, attracting professionals from diverse engineering disciplines.
