Roadmap unveiled for “advanced” manufacturing – Industry News

NITI Aayog’s Frontier Tech Hub has introduced a comprehensive road map titled “Reimagining Manufacturing: India’s Roadmap to Global Leadership in Advanced Manufacturing.” This identifies 13 high-impact manufacturing sectors and five key clusters, with artificial intelligence, machine learning, advanced materials, digital twins, and robotics as critical enablers. The goal is to achieve a 35% contribution of the manufacturing sector to India’s GDP.

The key clusters outlined in the report include engineering, consumer products, life sciences, electronics, and chemicals.

The report suggests prioritising advanced manufacturing under the National Manufacturing Mission (NMM), establishing a Global Frontier Technology Institute to facilitate the large-scale adoption of technology, designating model champion organisations, preparing for the servicification of manufacturing, and creating 20 advanced industrial hubs across the country between 2026 and 2028.

The report, developed by NITI Aayog’s Frontier Tech Hub in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Deloitte, was unveiled by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Pune on Wednesday.

 E. Subramanian, a partner at Deloitte, highlighted a $5.1 trillion gap in manufacturing that needs to be addressed. To bridge this gap, India’s manufacturing sector must grow at a rate of 12%, with long-term productivity growth in total factor productivity rising from 2.2% to 5.5%. This would require the emergence of 60 to 100 champion brands and an increase in exports from 1.8% to 10%.

B V R. Subrahmanyam, CEO of NITI Aayog, announced that the National Manufacturing Mission will be launched soon. He encouraged states to develop their own State Manufacturing Missions following the rollout of the  Mission, which was announced in the 2025-26 budget.
