Govt asks refineries to boost LPG output, prioritises household supply amid global disruptions

India’s Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has directed oil refineries to increase production of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and prioritise supplies for domestic consumers in response to geopolitical disruptions affecting global fuel availability.

In a statement shared on social media, the ministry said the additional LPG output will be channelled primarily toward household consumption to ensure uninterrupted supply. The move comes as global supply chains face pressure due to ongoing geopolitical tensions.

To prevent hoarding and black marketing, the government has also introduced a 25-day gap between LPG cylinder bookings for domestic consumers.

At the same time, LPG imported into the country will be prioritised for essential non-domestic sectors such as hospitals and educational institutions.

For other non-domestic users—including restaurants, hotels and industrial consumers—the government has set up a committee comprising three executive directors from state-run oil marketing companies to review requests and decide on LPG allocations.

Officials said the measures aim to balance domestic needs while ensuring critical services continue to receive fuel supplies.
