Bahrain’s state oil company, BAPCO, has declared force majeure for its shipments after an Iranian attack on its major refinery caused a massive fire.

The announcement was made via Bahrain’s state-run news agency.

Force majeure is a legal clause that allows a company to be free of its contractual supply obligations due to external or extraordinary circumstances.

The statement said that the company “have been affected by the ongoing regional conflict in the Middle East and the recent attack on its refinery complex.”

It also states that local demand can still be met and that supplies will continue without disruptions.

Over 80 per cent of the company’s refined products and crude oil are exported globally.

In a post on X, it stated, “Outbreak of a fire due to the Iranian aggression targeting a facility in Al Ma’ameer, with material damage reported but no casualties recorded, and the competent authorities have begun firefighting procedures.”

About 32 people were reportedly injured in the drone attack on the refinerymlocated in the Sitra area. The video showed smoke rising from the industrial zone housing the company.

Additional explosions were also heard in Bahrain after the fire in the refinery.
