Abhisit Vejjajiva, leader of the Democrat Party, said on Sunday deputy party leader Werapong Prapha should resign from both his party position and membership if he accepts a political appointment as an adviser to the commerce minister.
Mr Werapong has been tapped to join the advisory team of Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Suphajee Suthumpun, in recognition of his experience as a former trade representative.
Mr Abhisit said the role offered to Mr Werapong was a formal political appointment, distinct from informal advisory roles, as it carries official status and remuneration.
“I understood the matter was still at an informal discussion stage and was unaware whether the government would make any public announcement. I agree the role aligns with Mr Werapong’s expertise and interests, and the country would benefit from his contribution.”
While acknowledging that both the government and the country would benefit from Mr Werapong’s expertise, Mr Abhisit said he should step down from the party to avoid any confusion regarding the opposition’s role.
“Given Mr Werapong’s status as deputy party leader and a member of the Democrat Party, [his appointment] will cause confusion as it is in conflict with the party’s role as an opposition party.
“Ultimately, if Mr Werapong wishes to accept the position, he must relinquish his deputy party leader position and his membership in the party. So, it is now up to him to proceed,” said Mr Abhisit.
Mr Abhisit said Mr Werapong is expected to lead negotiations with the European Union on a free trade agreement, with the aim of concluding talks within the year.
Mr Werapong had consulted him after being approached about the position.
