While hosting Australian Ambassador for Counter-terrorism Gemma Huggins, BNPT Secretary Bangbang Surono emphasized that both nations share concerns over the spread of extremist narratives online targeting children and teenagers.
“The same concerns apply to the growing risks of terrorism funding which has seeped into virtual assets and financial technology, as well as challenges in rehabilitating and reintegrating terrorism-associated individuals into society,” he said in a statement on Sunday.
Surono noted that despite Indonesia recording zero terror attacks since 2023, the threat persists as extremist groups adapt to the digital space for propaganda, recruitment, and financing.
He observed that such groups have stepped up efforts to promote violence to Indonesian youth through social media platforms.
As part of the counterterrorism agenda, Indonesia has enacted the Government Regulation on the Governance of Electronic Systems in Child Protection known as PP Tunas.
Taking effect on March 28, 2026, the regulation restricts access for persons under 16 to high risk platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and X.
Surono also used the meeting to offer condolences to the Australian government for the fatal shooting at Bondi Beach last December.
“Indonesia remains committed to standing by Australia in facing persistent and adaptive terror threats,” the secretary stated.
Ambassador Gemma Huggins underlined the importance of dialogue to discuss viable efforts to protect citizens from online radicalization.
She said the Australian government applies a “comprehensive multi-pronged approach” grounded in three key measures: eliminating terrorism content, echoing counternarratives, and building media literacy.
The ambassador also highlighted emerging risks including the use of virtual currencies and generative artificial intelligence to spread extremist propaganda.
