Tesco makes major change that means shoppers can get a full trolley of groceries in just 20 minutes

TESCO has introduced a new change to its service which will allow shoppers order a full trolley of groceries for the same day delivery.

Brits will be able to stock up for a week or a whole month ahead without leaving their house.

Tesco’s rapid delivery service Whoosh has been upgraded to increase order sizes.

Previous orders had been restricted by weight that can be safely transported on a moped.

But thanks to the partnership with Stuart, groceries can be delivered by car or van driving couriers.

Hundreds of select stores will lift the upper limit on order size at certain times of the day.

However, it will be subject to availability at the time of the order.

If there are free van drivers in the area when the customer is filling their basket, the full-grocery option will become available on Tesco app.

Stuart CEO Cornelia Raportaru told the Grocer: “If you’re closer to a large Tesco store, you could literally order anything you want.

“Our strategy has been to push on innovation and do things no one else is doing.

“One example is large baskets – the appreciation that [shoppers] want to order a large basket for same-day delivery and not have to wait two days.

“Today in the UK, there’s almost no one except Stuart that has that capability that is cost-effective on all sides and rewarding also for the courier partners.”

Delivery fee will set you back £2.99 for the larger basket orders but there is no additional service charge.

Tesco introduced Whoosh in 2021 to a handful of stores but it has since spread to over 1,500 locations.

The retailer has shared that the service is becoming increasingly popular with a 60 per cent growth in demand year on year.

Tesco CEO Ken Murphy told the Grocer: “It’s now a really meaningful business.

“It’s now growing at a really rapid rate. It has, we believe, some real competitive advantage that we want to exploit.

“So, you can see further investment in that. I think there’s quite a long way to go before we would say that model is mature.”

Tesco sparks outrage

Tesco has recently come under fire for hiking up the cost of its plastic bags.

From October 29, the price of a single use bag has increased to 40p.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We encourage customers to bring shopping bags with them to cut down on plastic, but we sell a wide range of reusable bags in case they are needed.

“Our cheapest Bags for Life cost 40p and are made of 100% recycled plastic.

“They can be reused many times, and if they become worn out can be replaced for free at our customer service desks and recycled again.”
