Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Algernon Yau will head a business delegation to Kuala Lumpur on Monday to explore business opportunities in Malaysia.

Speaking on a radio programme on Saturday, he said the objective was to pair up businesses.

“I shall be taking a group of companies from the mainland and Hong Kong to Malaysia to facilitate business matchmaking with the government and companies there,” Yau said.

“These mainland enterprises have already set up operations in Hong Kong at our invitation. They know what services they need, as well as the kind of business partnerships they are looking for in Malaysia.”

Yau will also officiate at a flagship promotional event organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday.

He also expressed confidence that InvestHK would exceed its key performance target of assisting at least 1,200 overseas and mainland enterprises in setting up or expanding operations in Hong Kong this year and next.

The government’s investment promotion agency helped 413 companies get a foothold in Hong Kong in the first half of this year, bringing in over HK$53 billion in direct investment and creating more than 8,600 jobs.

Yau also said the GoGlobal Task Force – led by his bureau to support mainland enterprises expand internationally through the Hong Kong market – has been well received on the mainland.

He said more than 200 mainland enterprises have set up operations in Hong Kong since the task force was established in October, while thousands of companies across major cities and provinces such as Shanghai, Beijing, and Shandong have participated in its mainland promotional events.
