Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), under the leadership of its General Manager, Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, has reopened the six iron and steel manufacturing companies that were sealed on Monday in Odogunyan, Ikorodu, following confirmed improvements in their level of environmental compliance.
The companies were reopened after a comprehensive fact-finding and compliance assessment conducted by the Agency to verify that the affected facilities had taken the necessary steps to address the environmental infractions that led to the enforcement action.
It will be recalled that LASEPA, on Monday, sealed six iron and steel manufacturing companies operating within the Ikorodu Industrial Corridor as part of its sustained commitment to enforcing environmental regulations and promoting responsible industrial operations across Lagos State.
The affected companies are African Steel Mills Ltd, Pulkit Alloy & Steel Limited, LandCraft Industries Ltd, Sunflag Steel Nigeria Ltd, Gemini Steel Nigeria Ltd, and Top Steel Nigeria Ltd, all located in Odogunyan, Ikorodu.
Speaking during the reopening exercise, the General Manager of LASEPA, Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, explained that the earlier enforcement action became necessary following the discovery of several environmental infractions, including the emission of brown dust, black dust, mill scale, shredded dust, dead dust, and other non-metallic particulate matter.
According to Ajayi, these pollutants pose significant threats to air quality, public health, and the surrounding environment, making prompt regulatory intervention imperative.
Following extensive engagements with the affected companies, Ajayi revealed that Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between LASEPA and the iron and steel manufacturers before the facilities were unsealed.
Under the agreement, the companies committed to full compliance with all environmental laws, regulations, and operational guidelines issued by LASEPA.
They also pledged to implement all corrective measures contained in the Memorandum of Understanding to ensure environmentally responsible operations.
The General Manager explained that the enforcement operation was initiated after LASEPA’s real-time air quality monitoring network detected elevated pollution levels across the Odogunyan Industrial Corridor.
He said: “On Monday, July 27, we carried out an intensive enforcement exercise in the industrial and commercial corridors of Lagos after our air quality monitors detected several red flags. LASEPA has monitoring devices strategically installed across the State, and the data generated is publicly accessible. Once we observed abnormal pollution levels, we immediately deployed our enforcement teams for on-site inspections. We are equally concerned about the management of industrial waste in these heavy-polluting facilities because continuous monitoring and enforcement remain critical to reducing environmental pollution, promoting environmental protection, and safeguarding the health and livelihoods of Lagos residents.”
The General Manager further outlined the conditions for continued compliance, stressing that the affected industries must install and maintain efficient filtration systems on their furnaces to significantly reduce air emissions, while ensuring proper management and disposal of industrial waste in line with LASEPA’s approved environmental standards and protocols.
“Our technical team is permanently stationed within the Odogunyan Industrial Corridor to provide technical guidance and ensure strict compliance with these directives.
The companies are expected to fully implement these measures to sustain environmentally responsible operations,” he added.
Highlighting the public health implications of poor air quality, Ajayi noted that prolonged exposure to elevated concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) could trigger respiratory illnesses and other serious health complications. He explained that LASEPA’s swift intervention following the detection of increased pollution levels had already resulted in a significant reduction in emissions, thereby minimizing potential health risks to surrounding communities.
He reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to sustained environmental surveillance and enforcement across industrial corridors in Lagos State, emphasizing that environmental compliance is a continuous obligation rather than a one-time exercise.
“Our enforcement and monitoring teams will remain on the ground every day to ensure that industrial activities do not compromise the health, safety, and well-being of residents living within host communities,” he stated.
Also speaking during the visit, the newly appointed Zonal Head of Ikorodu I, Engr. Taiwo Olumuyiwa, urged the companies to strengthen their environmental management systems and adopt international best practices that would significantly reduce emissions, improve waste management, and promote cleaner production processes.
He reaffirmed LASEPA’s commitment to working collaboratively with industries while maintaining firm enforcement of environmental regulations to protect public health and advance the vision of a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Lagos.
