It’s only been a week since the launch of Shetland Heroes Awards and we have already been amazed by the response.
With so many dedicated heroes in the community, The Shetland Times had every faith our readers would get behind their nominees to ensure they receive the recognition they deserve – and that has certainly proven to be the case.
Over the coming weeks we’ll take a more detailed look at some of the individual categories and hear from our sponsors about why they wanted to get involved.
This week it’s the Healthcare and Emergency Service Hero category.
From doctors and nurses to police officers, firefighters, coastguards, and ambulance crews, these individuals are the backbone of our safety and well-being.
While it could rightly be said that every one of them is a deserving hero in their own right, we’re looking out for people who have gone far beyond the call of duty.
This could be a life-saving action, consistent compassion under intense pressure, or an individual who regularly brings extraordinary comfort and reassurance to patients or the public.

People have until Sunday, 30th August, to make their choices. From these, judges will select a short-list, which will go before the public to choose the winners.
These will be revealed at a glamorous awards ceremony at Mareel on Tuesday, 1st December.
