Garuda Indonesia Passengers to Get Up to 64kg Checked Baggage Thanks to New Piece-Based Policy

Garuda’s new international business and first class allowance of 64kg puts it on a par with several major carriers that already run piece-based systems.

United Airlines for instance, allows business and first class passengers two bags of up to 32kg each on piece-concept routes, matching Garuda’s new total exactly. Lufthansa beats both when it comes to generosity, allowing first class passengers three bags of up to 32kg each, for a maximum of 96kg, on select intercontinental flights.

Regional commercial partner Singapore Airlines remains on a weight-based system for most of its network outside the US and Canada, capping business and first class at 40kg and 50kg respectively – well below Garuda’s new international ceiling. It only shifts to a comparable two-piece, 32kg model on flights to and from the US and Canada.

Allowances vary by fare type, route and elite status across all these carriers, so travellers connecting onto a partner airline should always check the operating carrier’s own limits before departure.
