Jakarta. The government has confirmed that all three Indonesians in Venezuela are safe after powerful quakes with magnitudes over 7 recently struck the South American country.
Back-to-back 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude tremors had rocked Venezuela on Wednesday evening local time. The US Geological Survey (USGS) has said that “high casualties and extensive damage are probable”, while putting an initial death toll estimate from 10,000 to 100,000.
“Our embassy in Caracas quickly reached out to the Indonesian citizens in Venezuela. Based on the embassy’s monitoring, all three Indonesians in Venezuela are safe and healthy,” Foreign Ministry’s citizen protection director Heni Hamidah told the Jakarta Globe on Thursday.
Indonesia’s diplomatic buildings in Venezuela also do not “suffer significant structural damage”.

Jakarta also “expressed its deep condolences” over the disaster, according to Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Yvonne Mewengkang.
“We [Indonesia] wish for speedy recovery,” Yvonne said.
Reports show that these are Venezuela’s worst tremors in a century.
