Agency Issues Apology Amid Controversy
“Failure to Register Change Was Staff Error”

Tao (Huang Zitao), a Chinese singer and former member of the idol group EXO, received an administrative penalty in Beijing after being found illegally parking a supercar and failing to report a change in the vehicle’s color.

According to China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency on June 19, the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau launched an investigation after receiving a resident’s report about a passenger car with an out-of-town license plate being illegally parked.

The investigation revealed that the driver, Tao, was penalized for violating parking regulations and for failing to register the vehicle color change within the required period after modifying the car’s appearance.

Citing a statement by the Beijing city traffic management authorities, Xinhua reported that penalties would be imposed based on the Road Traffic Safety Law of the People’s Republic of China and the Beijing Road Traffic Safety Administrative Penalty Discretion Standards, with the severity determined by the presence or absence of no-parking signs and other factors in the road section.

As controversy grew, Tao’s agency issued an apology, saying, “Tao is deeply reflecting on his wrongdoing and paid the fine after receiving education from the traffic police earlier that morning.”

The agency clarified that the vehicle in question was not illegally modified but had only its body color changed. They explained that the failure to register the change was due to an error by the responsible staff member.

Videos released online showed Tao and his wife in downtown Beijing, arriving at a restaurant in a black Lamborghini convertible and then leaving the car parked on the street as they walked away. Xinhua noted that “the car drew attention throughout the illegal parking incident because its roof remained open.”
