The United Arab Emirates said its decision to leave OPEC and OPEC+ was not based on political reasons and did not reflect any split between Abu Dhabi and its partners.

UAE Energy and Infrastructure Minister Suhail Al Mazrouei said in a written statement on X that the decision was a sovereign and strategic move aligned with the country’s long-term economic vision, evolving energy capacity and commitment to global energy security.

The UAE announced that it had decided to leave OPEC and OPEC+ as of May 1.

UAE cites national interests

Al Mazrouei said the decision followed comprehensive assessments of the country’s national production policy and future capacity.

He said the move was shaped only by the UAE’s national interests, its responsibility as a reliable energy supplier and its commitment to market stability.

Al Mazrouei reiterated that the decision was not based on any political considerations and did not reflect a rupture between the UAE and its partners.

He said the country’s decisions are guided by national interests, not external speculation.

UAE Industry and Advanced Technology Minister Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber said on May 4 that the decision to leave OPEC and OPEC+ was “a strategic and well-considered decision” that did not target anyone.

Al Mazrouei’s remarks came after Abu Dhabi’s announcement that it would end its membership in OPEC and OPEC+ from May 1.
