Cheltenham Gold Cup betting trends (since 2000)

  • Four of the last six favourites have obliged.

  • A significant proportion of Gold Cup winners had already won or placed at the Cheltenham Festival prior to their victory. Many had experience specifically on the New Course, which places greater emphasis on stamina and jumping late in the race.

  • No winners were aged 10 years or over, with the last 10 winners being aged between seven and nine. The last winner aged 10 or older was Cool Dawn in 1998.

  • Only Native River wore any sort of headgear and is the only English-trained champion in the last decade.

  • Only Kauto Star (2007 & 2009) has regained the Cheltenham Gold Cup this century.

  • Imperial Commander in 2009 was the last horse to run in the King George VI Chase and then go on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

  • Only two winners had completed more than 13 previous chase starts, none more than 20.

  • Only three winners failed to finish 1st or 2nd last time out with 2025 champion Inothewayurthinkin having come home fourth in his previous outing before victory in the Gold Cup.

  • Only three winners had failed to already win that season before going on to Gold Cup success.

  • Nine of the last 10 winners had won a Grade 1 chase prior to winning the Gold Cup.

  • Nine of the last 10 winners had won over a distance of three miles or longer.

  • Only two of the last 25 winners have obliged at odds of 10/1 or bigger.
