How has inflation affected the way people shop for groceries?

The Caller-Times asked people how inflation has affected the way they grocery shop. Here’s what they said.

Grocery prices have skyrocketed over recent years, with costs increasing by almost 30% since 2019, according to the USDA.

However, income growth hasn’t seen the same increase, leading to a disparity between money spent on groceries and household earnings.

This disparity is even more evident depending on where you live and, in order to find out where in the U.S. residents spend the most on groceries, WalletHub analyzed states based on household income and what percentage of income residents spend on groceries.

How much does Louisiana spend on groceries?

Louisiana ranked as the 4th state that spend the most on groceries, with the average household in the state spending approximately 2.38% of median monthly income on groceries, according to WalletHub.

The median annual household income in Louisiana is approximately $60,756, according to Census.gov, making the median monthly income $5,063.

This means that the average household in Louisiana spends approximately $2,127 on groceries each month.

Mississippi is said to spend the most on groceries in the U.S., with average household spending 2.60% of median monthly income on groceries. While grocery prices in Mississippi are relatively low, the problem is that Mississippi has the lowest median annual income, which is $54,915, according to WalletHub.
