Returning to the trade dynamics that have, together with the deficits, been a major factor in platinum’s price rally. There are three global centres for international metals trading, London, New York and Shanghai. In normal market conditions there is a relatively unfettered flow of metal between London and New York, whilst trade into Shanghai tends to be mostly one way due to China’s export restrictions (China is the biggest platinum consumer globally).
