HMRC warning for anyone with a National Insurance number

Anyone with a National Insurance number has been issued an important warning from HMRC. The Labour Party government tax arm has urged people to “only share it when you need to” in a recent update.

Taking to X, HMRC typed: “Download the HMRC app to view your National Insurance number. Remember, only share it when you need to – like when you start a new job.”

You can find your National Insurance number on a document you already have, for example a P60, payslip or letters about benefits, in your personal tax account if you already have one, in the HMRC app if you live in the UK or in your Apple or Google Wallet if you’ve previously saved it there.

You can also use your personal tax account or HMRC app to download a letter that shows your National Insurance number.

Your National Insurance number is made up of 2 letters, 6 numbers and a final letter, for example, QQ123456B.

You can use this service if you need to find your National Insurance number or know your number, but need it on a letter.

You’ll need to sign in to use this service. If you do not already have sign in details, you’ll be able to create them.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) will not tell you your National Insurance number over the phone or on webchat.

You’ll be able to view your National Insurance number online if you can prove your identity, for example using a passport or driving licence.

If you cannot prove your identity, you can still use this service, but you will not be able to view your National Insurance number online. It will be posted to the address that HMRC has on record for you. This can take up to 10 working days to arrive.

You cannot use this service if you live abroad. You’ll need to contact HMRC to get a letter confirming your National Insurance number. This can take up to 21 working days to arrive.
