The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) organised a forward-looking Chintan Shivir on “Alternate & Emerging Technologies in E-Motors” on 5 December 2025 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. The event brought together leading industry stakeholders, innovators, academic institutions, and research organisations committed to accelerating India’s transition toward advanced and sustainable electric mobility.

The Shivir served as a strategic platform for deep discussions on technology innovation, resilience of supply chains, and India’s long-term roadmap for adopting alternative motor technologies across the electric vehicle (EV) spectrum.

Industry, Experts and Innovators Drive Discussion on Next-Gen E-Motors

Participants engaged in expert presentations, panel discussions and interactive sessions focusing on:

  • breakthroughs in electric motor engineering

  • sustainable and high-efficiency propulsion systems

  • domestic manufacturing readiness

  • strategies for reducing dependence on global supply chains

  • opportunities for indigenous innovation in EV components

The initiative highlighted the growing need for energy-efficient, lighter and cost-effective motor systems to strengthen the national EV ecosystem.

Key Motor Technologies Highlighted at the Shivir

The sessions explored a wide array of alternate and emerging E-Motor technologies, including:

  • Induction Motors – robust, scalable and cost-effective

  • Switched Reluctance Motors (SRMs) – magnet-free, fault-tolerant systems

  • Wound-Field Synchronous Motors (WFSMs) – adjustable excitation for higher efficiency

  • Permanent-Magnet-Assisted Synchronous Reluctance Motors (PMA-SRMs) – improved torque efficiency

  • Motors using ferrite or non-rare-earth magnets – addressing dependency on scarce global resources

The discussions underscored the need to diversify India’s motor technology base, particularly in light of supply chain vulnerabilities around rare-earth materials.

A Nationally Prioritised Roadmap for the EV Ecosystem

A key outcome of the Chintan Shivir was the development of a nationally aligned roadmap for the deployment of alternate motor technologies across diverse vehicle segments:

The roadmap categorised technologies into short-term, medium-term and long-term options based on commercial readiness, performance metrics, manufacturing feasibility and cost optimisation.

India Must Lead the Global E-Motor Revolution: Kamran Rizvi

Speaking at the event, Shri Kamran Rizvi, Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries, emphasised that the Chintan Shivir’s objective extends far beyond overcoming rare-earth supply challenges.

He stated:

“India must aspire to design and supply the next generation of electric motors—lighter, more efficient, cost-effective and environmentally sustainable. Our goal is to position India as a global leader in the evolving e-mobility landscape.”

He urged industry and academia to work in close partnership to accelerate innovation, scale manufacturing capacity and develop globally competitive technologies.

Strengthening India’s Electric Vehicle Value Chain

The Shivir also emphasised:

  • strengthening testing and certification infrastructure

  • developing indigenous components and ancillary technologies

  • boosting R&D investments in magnet-free and hybrid motor designs

  • improving collaboration between startups, OEMs and research labs

  • enhancing policy and regulatory support for technology deployment

These steps are critical for achieving a resilient and self-reliant EV supply chain under the national strategy of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Collective Commitment to a Future-Ready Automotive Ecosystem

The event concluded with a unified commitment from all participating stakeholders—industry bodies, research institutions, technology developers, and policymakers—to continue collaborative efforts toward advancing India’s automotive innovation landscape.

The Chintan Shivir marked a key milestone in India’s journey toward building a globally competitive, efficient, and sustainable e-mobility ecosystem, laying strong foundations for rapid EV adoption and indigenous manufacturing strength.
