Resolving Health Care Dispute Could Bump Up Against Saturday Deadline

Hartford HealthCare has warned Anthem members that hospitals, ancillary providers and doctors will be considered higher cost out-of-network services if negotiations fail to produce a new agreement to replace the three-year contract that expires Saturday.

When classified as out-of-network, hospitals and other health care facilities and providers require higher out-of-pocket costs for services. Affected hospitals include Hartford Hospital, the Hospital of Central Connecticut in New Britain and Southington, MidState Medical Center in Meriden, Backus Hospital in Norwich, Windham Hospital in Willimantic and the Institute of Living, a Hartford facility that treats mental illness and other health conditions.

Anthem spokeswoman Sarah Yeager said negotiators in the past have “worked up to midnight to get a deal done.”

Shawn Mawhiney, a spokesman for Hartford HealthCare, said Thursday it had made clear it’s available “to meet at any time” and was waiting to hear from Anthem on its last counter offer.

Anthem continues to negotiate, Yeager said, but is “just not willing to agree upon the increases they are requesting.”

Hartford HealthCare urged members to call Anthem and urge “continued access” to Hartford HealthCare providers and services.

Anthem has said that in the unlikely event an agreement is not reached, its priority will be to “ensure that current services being provided to our members by/at these facilities and providers are not interrupted and that needs for future services may be transitioned to other comparable facilities and providers.”
