A Pocono Mountain congressman said at a town hall that he hopes Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) will vote against the Graham-Cassidy health care bill because he’s currently “staring death in the face.”

Pennsylvania Rep. Matt Cartwright (D) made the remarks during an event at Lehigh Carbon Community College’s Tamaqua campus, about 20 miles west of Lehighton.

Cartwright, an opponent of the Republican measure to repeal-and-replace ObamaCare, said he is confident that the 81-year-old Vietnam War veteran will side with Democrats.

McCain recently took a leave of absence from Congress after he was discovered to have brain cancer.

“McCain – I’m worried about,” Cartwright said. “Something tells me, McCain – he’s staring death in the face right now – so he’s probably going to make good choices and he’s not going to bend to political pressure,” Cartwright told the Coal Region audience.

Response was swift to the two-term Democrat’s statements, as McCain’s daughter Meghan blasted Cartwright’s words as “disgusting and macabre.”

Conservative group America Rising PAC also ripped Cartwright’s assertion.

The Washington Examiner reported that they reached out to Cartwright’s office, but received no immediate comment.
