Aviation Fun Day takes over Waterloo Regional Airport today

It’s time to grab your walking shoes and explore the Waterloo International Airport on foot.

It’s the third annual Aviation Fun Day at the airport.

The fun starts at 10 a.m., and the festivities will keep you soaring until 4 p.m.

“Aviation Fun Day is a free event that really was created to showcase the airport in its entirety,” says Sandra McAuley, Supervisor of Marketing and Communications at the Waterloo International Airport. “So basically it’s vintage air craft, aircraft maintenance engineers, there is sight seeing rides, which is the only thing you have to pay for — everything else is free.”

A donation to the Food Bank would be appreciated as an entrance fee, McAuley says. “We are excepting donations to both Food Banks, that’s the Cambridge Self Help Food Bank, and the Food Bank of Waterloo Region,” she says. “To date, we have raised just over $3,500, and collected about 3,500 pounds of food as well, which is important to them because the summer is a bit slower in terms of donations.”

There is multiple events and sights to take in, as there is four sections to explore including Apron 4 — an area usually restricted to the public.

There will be flight simulators, and another big draw McAuley says will be the 26 characters from the 501st Canadian Garrison, which is a Star Wars costuming organization.

A photo booth will be set up, so you can get a picture with your favorite Star Wars character.

This is a rain or shine event.
